Reductions in turbidity and Escherichia coli density using passive polymer treatment CIGR Journal
Berry, James; Sawyer, Calvin; Privette, Charles; Hayes, John; Bridges, William.
Current research shows sediment basins may act as reservoirs for potentially harmful bacteria, including Escherichia coli (E. coli). E. coli preferentially attach to clay-sized particles and have been found in sediment basin outflows with high turbidity levels containing concentrations exceeding water quality standards recommended by the US Environmental Protection Agency. Since research shows E. coli preferentially attach to the clay fraction within sediment, it was hypothesized that a reduction in turbidity and TSS would create a corresponding reduction in bacterial density.  Construction site sediment basin discharge was simulated to determine whether a sediment tube configuration using anionic polymer application could reduce E. coli densities. Based...

In 2000 Ifremer launched and coordinated the development of a monitoring strategy for the REBENT network (REseau BENThique) in order to assess the aftermath of the “Erika” oil spill which took place in December 1999. Its aim is to provide consistent baseline knowledge on coastal benthic habitats, as well as to develop a monitoring tool that detects changes at various spatial and temporal scales. Sector-based seabed habitat mapping in shallow water (< 50 m deep), is currently being conducted throughout Brittany's coastal waters using a combination of geoacoustic marine systems together with ground-truthing using biological grab sampling and seabed observations. Due to the extended area, the overlap of soft and rocky bottoms, and contrasting hydrological...

Retrospective study of metal contamination time trends in the French part of the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Boutier, Bernard; Quintin, Jean-yves; Rozuel, Emmanuelle; Auger, Dominique; Bretaudeau-sanjuan, Jane.
Two cores were sampled in the Bay of Biscay: one a few miles off the Gironde estuary (pointe de la Coubre), the other near the Spanish border (Capbreton canyon) to study past variations in sediment contamination. Radiochronology (210Pb, 137Cs) and total metal determinations by ICP-MS allowed the study of time trends for metal concentrations in sediment. Off the Gironde, during the time interval recorded by the core (1958–1999), all metal concentrations remained less than OSPAR background values. Some variations occurred along the Cd and Zn profiles, which may correspond to a very attenuated signal from the Gironde outputs. This suggests that this area was not submitted to any significant anthropogenic input of metals between 1958 and 1999. In the canyon of...

Satellite-derived parameters for biological modelling in coastal waters: Illustration over the eastern continental shelf of the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Gohin, Francis; Loyer, S; Lunven, Michel; Labry, Claire; Froidefond, J; Delmas, Daniel; Huret, Martin; Herbland, Alain.
In biological modelling of the coastal phytoplankton dynamics, the light attenuation coefficient is often expressed as a function of the concentrations of chlorophyll and mineral suspended particulate matter (SPM). In order to estimate the relationship between these parameters over the continental shelf of the northern Bay of Biscay, a set of in situ data has been gathered for the period 1998-2003 when SeaWiFS imagery is available. These data comprise surface measurements of the concentrations of total SPM, chlorophyll, and irradiance profiles from which is derived the attenuation coefficient of the photosynthetically available radiation, K-PAR. The performance of the IFREMER look-up table used to retrieve the chlorophyll concentration from the SeaWiFS...

Sediment and polyacrylamide effects on seepage from channeled flows NWISRL
Lentz, R.D.; Freeborn, L.L..
Seepage from water streams into unlined channels determines the proportion of water distributed to adjacent soil for plant use or soil or groundwater recharge or conveyed to downstream reaches. We conducted a laboratory study to determine how sediment type (none, clay, and silt), sediment concentration (0, 0.5, and 2 g Lj1 ), and water-soluble anionic polyacrylamide (PAM) concentration (0, 0.4, and 2 mg Lj1 ) inf luences seepage loss of irrigation water (electrical conductivity = 0.04 S mj1 ; sodium adsorption ratio = 2.2) from unlined channels in silt loam soil. In a minif lume, a preformed channel with 7% slope was supplied with 40 mL minj1 simulated irrigation water inf lows containing the different treatment combinations. Runoff and...

Sedimentary characteristics and their effects on hatching success and incubation duration of Caretta caretta (Testudines: Cheloniidae) in Espirito Santo, Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Fadini,Lauana Schneider; Silva,Ary Gomes; Ferreira-Júnior,Paulo Dias.
The beaches of Espírito Santo encompass the most important nesting sites of the loggerhead sea turtle, Caretta caretta (Linnaeus, 1758), in the South Atlantic Ocean. Previous research has shown that, unlike other nesting sites in Brazil, Espírito Santo harbors a large percentage of male individuals, which play an important role in maintaining the equilibrium of C. caretta populations in the South Atlantic. During the 2006/2007 reproductive season, four beaches presenting considerable geologic differences were monitored. The sedimentary features of the nesting sites (mineral composition, albedo, and grain size), nesting dates, and clutch sizes were correlated with hatching success and incubation duration. Results show that hatching success is mostly...

Sediments and herbivory as sensitive indicators of coral reef degradation Ecology and Society
Goatley, Christopher H. Around the world, the decreasing health of coral reef ecosystems has highlighted the need to better understand the processes of reef degradation. The development of more sensitive tools, which complement traditional methods of monitoring coral reefs, may reveal earlier signs of degradation and provide an opportunity for pre-emptive responses. We identify new, sensitive metrics of ecosystem processes and benthic composition that allow us to quantify subtle, yet destabilizing, changes in the ecosystem state of an inshore coral reef on the Great Barrier Reef. Following severe climatic disturbances over the period 2011-2012, the herbivorous reef fish community of the reef did not change in terms of biomass or functional groups present. However, fish-based...

Sewage sludge application on cultivated soils: effects on runoff and trace metal load Scientia Agricola
Galdos,Marcelo Valadares; De Maria,Isabella Clerici; Camargo,Otávio Antonio de; Dechen,Sonia Carmela Falci.
The use of sewage sludge in agricultural soils as a macro and micronutrient source and as a soil conditioner has been one of the alternatives for its disposal. However, sewage sludge contains trace metals, which are potential sources of pollution. The goal of this study was to evaluate the effect of sewage sludge application on surface water contamination through runoff when it was applied in a soil cultivated with corn. The effect of sludge application on the concentration and load of copper, nickel and zinc and the volume of runoff water and sediment were evaluated. The experiment was set up in plots used to study erosion losses in Campinas, Sao Paulo State, Brazil. The soil is a clayey Rhodic Hapludox. Three treatments were studied: no sewage sludge,...

Short-term interactions between phytoplankton and intertidal seagrass vegetation in a coastal lagoon (Bassin d'Arcachon, SW France) ArchiMer
De Wit, Rutger; Troussellier, Marc; Courties, Claude; Buffan-dubau, Evelyne; Lemaire, Emmanuelle.
We experimentally simulated the temporality of the interactions between intertidal seagrasses and phytoplankton in the context of nutrient enrichment from continental origin. Phytoplankton development was retarded after 1-day exposure to intertidal Zostera noltii Hornemann vegetation samples, with respect to control treatments. This was not explained by resource competition and we hypothesized a direct interference between seagrass leaves and phytoplankton. After separation from the vegetation in 5-day incubations, the final yield of large phytoplankton, mainly diatoms and haptophytes, was determined by nutrient loading. In contrast, Synechococcus-like cells (SYN), phototrophic picoeukaryotes and nanophytoplankton decreased after day 3, most likely due to...

Soil and Nutrient Losses from Small Sprinkler and Furrow Irrigated Watersheds in Southern Idaho NWISRL
Bjorneberg, D.L.; King, B.A.; Nelson, Nathan; Lee, J.H..
Sediment and associated nutrients flowing to the Snake River with furrow irrigation runoff and unused irrigation water have been a concern in the Twin Falls irrigation tract in southern Idaho. Converting furrow irrigated fields to sprinkler irrigation is one practice that has been promoted, and received financial assistance, to reduce sediment loss. Five small watersheds (330 to 1480 acres) with 10 to 70% sprinkler irrigation were monitored from 2005 to 2008 to determine if converting to sprinkler irrigation reduced sediment and nutrient losses from these watersheds. Eliminating runoff from furrow irrigated fields by converting to sprinkler irrigation will reduce sediment and nutrient losses from fields. However, there were no significant correlations...

Soil tillage, water erosion, and calcium, magnesium and organic carbon losses Scientia Agricola
Bertol,Ildegardis; Guadagnin,Jean Cláudio; González,Antonio Paz; Amaral,André Júlio do; Brignoni,Leonardo Felipe.
Soil tillage influences water erosion, and consequently, losses of calcium, magnesium and organic carbon in surface runoff. Nutrients and organic carbon are transported by surface runoff in particulate form, adsorbed to soil colloids or soluble in water, depending on the soil tillage system. This study was carried out on an Inceptisol, representative of the Santa Catarina highlands, southern Brazil, between November 1999 and October 2001, under natural rainfall. The soil tillage treatments (no replications) were: no-tillage (NT), minimum soil tillage with chiseling + disking (MT), and conventional soil tillage with plowing + two diskings (CT). The crop cycles sequence was soybean (Glycine max), oats (Avena sativa), beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) and vetch...
